A client was hardening his VMware environment and obviously he referred the vmware kb article TCP and UDP Ports required to access VMware vCenter Server, VMware ESXi and ESX hosts, and other network components (1012382) and as per that kb port 903 is no more needed to be for the ESXi 5.x but as per another vmware kb Required ports for vCenter Server 5.1.x (2031843) the port 903 is still required for the normal functionality of your environment. I too was puzzled and thanks to VMware they quickly clarified that this was a typo within KB 1012382
So, now I can go back to my client and inform him that 903 is indeed a needed port and it should be very much open between hosts and the vcenter server.

kudos to the swiftness of the vmware kb team and they have updated the kb now.
